Stimulus Past

Why weren't critical infrastructure needs prioritized over other issues...like LED lightbulbs?

See the story here by CNN regarding our failing water mains.

80 year old pipelines, billions of dollars and many gallons in waste, and a D- rating from the American Society of Civil Engineers.

I'm happy to help you create, and offer my assistance if I can. Give me a shout.

Marketing Green to a New Generation

How do you market your green creds to smartypants kids?

Research conclusions from Greenbiz.com note that "this wireless, hyper-connected, rather-text-than-talk age group relies on ads, product labels and news coverage for its green product information before performing a search on the Internet."

Being a skeptic myself, I've long questioned the utility of many new media fads. This study supports that, stating that the "idea that social marketing will simply create gravity for green products does not hold water."

Moreover, "Nearly all consumers, not just 18- to 24-year-olds, want products and services that satisfy universal needs such as comfort, wellness and convenience."

The conclusion made, and that I support is that companies that focus on high-quality design and traditional consumer-facing activity are more apt to reach their target consumer.  We can see this play out in the real world too.

If you need some inspiration look at the techniques employed by companies like Target, Method, Nike, and repeat.

Saab : "Blackbird"

You may know by now that Saab is one of my favorite brands, and one of my favorite cars.  So, today, on the last day of "bidding" for the this great company, I thought I'd share with you some of what we'd lose if the company goes under.

Dream Big!

As I embark on a new chapter of my life, I am compelled to revisit a question that I first asked two years ago.

Who are the thought leaders, the visionaries, the reformers? And, what are the revolutionary ideas that will make our world more sustainable?

Notably, I wonder...who of this age, will be thought of as having the intellect and leadership abilities on par with great persons of the past?

A few names definitely come to mind. But overall, there is an unsettling lack of worthy characters.

Without visionaries and generals to move things forward, the dearth of vision and quality will continue to undermine the hard work of others. In particular, the US sustainability arena (for obvious reasons is most important to me) is largely dominated by a handful of persons, working in a handful of firms, in and around communities that have traditionally been epicenters of “liberal” thought.

I have yet to see, hear, or otherwise witness the broad and truly meaningful engagement of the various spheres and systems that contribute to our daily lives. Most of what I notice are contrivances and hap-hazard attempts, primarily aimed at “greening” product lines...by unknowledgeable people, and companies cashing in on a trend.

While some are more notable than others, and there are some remarkable exceptions, there are VERY FEW things in that marketplace that can/will fundamentally alter the status-quo.

So, what does bring about real, positive change? And, who am I looking for? What do I propose?

We need to take a cue from our past and embark on a national project with the magnitude of invention! We need someone with profound ability. We need to find more of them. And, we need to make a commitment to personal and corporate change, excellence, and leadership.

Without these last three, the first two will never succeed.
